Hog Slaughter Policy
2009-12-17

It is learned from the Ministry of Commerce that Hog Slaughter Industry’s Development Outline (2010 ~ 2015) is to be implemented soon. The document puts forward a slaughter industry pattern of developing transregional modern slaughter enterprises, supplemented by local designated slaughterhouses.

Over the last few years, a number of large integrated hog production and slaughter projects have been kicked off, each capable of 1 ~ 20 million heads of hogs a year. When these projects are completed in 2012 or so, their hog production may total 300 million heads a year, holding 50% of the nation’s market.

The rise of these slaughter giants may threaten the existing designated slaughterhouses. The government is presumed to intensify crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses and restrict small slaughterhouses.
